Chapter Sixteen

By the time we make it back to the house, everyone is on the patio and seated around the table. I was hoping I could sneak through this way before anyone saw us, then go and shower the pond muck off our bodies. I shiver at the thought of what could be living in that fucking filthy water. I can’t believe Lily would be so careless as to just jump in. What if I had a pet water snake or some other weird shit in there?

We are drenched. Lily put her dress back on, but the wetness from her bra and panties has soaked through, causing the material to cling to her body. Her hair’s dripping down her back. Yet, when I look at her, she doesn’t seem to have a care in the world. Her smile is fucking huge as she approaches the table. There are only two seats left, and they’re not fucking next to each other. One of them is at the head of the table, with Mia and Leo sitting on each side. The seat that’s always reserved for me. I can’t not sit there. It would send the wrong fucking message to my men.

I’m the head of this organisation. I have to be seated at the head of the table. But there’s no way in hell I’m not sitting next to Lily. What I’m about to do is going to make a statement—a huge fucking statement—to everyone, especially my men. They will all get the message that Lily is worth more to me than anyone else.

My steps falter as I walk around the table to the only vacant chair. If I do this, it will put a huge fucking target on her back. I have many enemies. And if I don’t, I’m implying she’s not important enough to be seated next to me. I’m damned if I do, damned if I don’t. The thought of not sitting next to her though, that thought alone has me picking up the chair, carrying it around the table, and placing it down right next to mine.

I nod my head for Lily to sit. She stares back at me, wide-eyed. Everyone else around the table has gone quiet, looking to see what happens next. This is unheard of. I’m surprised Lily would know the hidden meaning behind my actions. But the look on her face tells me she has no doubt.

“Lily, don’t overthink it. Sit down,” I growl into her ear. She shivers before smiling at me and taking her seat. I tuck her chair in. Nodding my head to one of the servers, I tell him to arrange another place setting before I take my own seat. Everyone is still quiet, staring at Lily and me. “Did someone die?” I ask.

“Not yet, but the night’s young,” Ash answers with a cocky smirk.

“Okay, let’s eat then. I’m starving,” I say, and right on cue, the servers come out with the entrees.

There’s a range of share platters, containing seafood, cold meats, and cheeses as well as a variety of other finger foods.
